Prevent Awareness

Prevention in adult safeguarding is proactive, multi-faceted, and person-centred, aiming to reduce the likelihood of abuse or neglect while promoting independence, well-being and human rights. It combines early intervention, education, policy, empowerment, and interagency collaboration to create safer environments for vulnerable adults.

Lunch & Learn:

The session provides an overview of the UK Prevent strategy, which aims to safeguard individuals from radicalisation and extremism. It explains that Prevent is part of the wider CONTEST counter-terrorism strategy and focuses on early intervention, helping people through support (e.g. the voluntary Channel programme) rather than punishment.

The presentation highlights current risks and trends, particularly the rise in extreme right-wing ideology, online radicalisation, and the increasing involvement of young people. It outlines how radicalisation happens (often via online content or peer influence) and stresses the importance of recognising warning signs such as extremist symbols, language, conspiracy theories, and misinformation.

A key theme is the role of social media and online platforms in spreading harmful content, recruiting individuals, and amplifying misinformation and disinformation. The session also draws attention to emerging risks such as online harm networks and misogynistic extremist communities.

The key message for practitioners is to “Notice, Check, and Share”—stay alert to signs of radicalisation, seek advice if needed, and make Prevent referrals where there are concerns to help protect individuals and communities.
