The Herbert and Forcer Protocol

The Herbert Protocol is named after a war veteran of the Normandy landings named George Herbert, who lived with dementia in a care home. Mr. Herbert went missing and sadly died while searching for his childhood home. The protocol encourages carers or family members of adults living with dementia to collate information on those who are vulnerable on to the Herbert Protocol form. The form can then be used in the event of a person with dementia going missing, to provide vital information to assist in finding them.

  • CSAB facilitated a lunch and learn event in relation to The Herbert Protocol, which also includes information on a similar Protocol named The Forcer Protocol which is used by the police for service veterans who are lost or have gone missing.  You can watch the informative video of the lunch & learn event which was delivered by Cumbria Police: https://CSAB The Herbert & Forcer Protocol lunch & learn event The accompanying presentation slides can be found by clicking the following link:
  • Cumbria Safeguarding Adults Board commissioned the following animation on 'The Herbert Protocol' and are promoting the protocol to raise awareness of when a person with dementia goes missing, how this simple risk reduction tool can help the police in their search to find the person.  Thanks are extended to Norfolk Safeguarding Adult's Board for kindly agreeing for the animation to be adapted for use by other Boards: https://The Herbert Protocol Animation
